ALF IN THAILAND
FED Schools and Healthcare for Burmese
FED, The Foundation for Education and Development (formerly Grassroots HRE) is working to promote education, human rights, and the development of safe, working environment for Burmese migrants and their families in Thailand. Their programs are focused on Burmese migrants in Phang Nga, South Thailand and Mae Sot. In 2007 ALF funded the refurbishing of a dilapidated school for Burmese migrant children in Khuraburi, 2 hours north of Phuket. The school roof was repaired, followed by a complete renovation of the classrooms, the building of a fence protecting the children's playground and the laying of concrete slabs to replace the previous dirt floors. The school is situated next to a lowland tidal inlet with canals that sometimes flood surrounding buildings during rainy season and high tides causing serious drainage and sanitation problems in this neighborhood. ALF funding enabled bulwarks to be built alongside the school's foundation, thus prevented the flooding of classrooms and finally making the rooms completely habitable. Given the events of the past year, Burmese immigrants continue flood into Thailand, putting the Khuraburi school to good use. ALF has committed to funding the operating expenses of this school which has been successfully educating poor migrant children with the long term goal of integration them into Thai schools. The organizations director, Burmese activist Mr. Htoo Chit was selected as an ASHOKA Fellow in 2008 recognition of his good works.
In 2010, along with the Child’s Dream Foundation we co-funded the purchase of land in Kaho Lak for the construction of a new Unified Learning Center. This new facility will consolidate several smaller, rudimentary Burmese schools and reduce overall operating costs.
