ALF IN BALI
North Bali Women's Healthcare Project

North Bali is one of the most impoverished parts of the island of Bali. The long-term aim of this initiative was to set up a women's healthcare pilot project as an example for other rural communities, using the village of Pemuteran, North Bali, as an example.

This project involved training and equipping 2 midwife clinics in this village to enable detection of breast/cervical cancers and sexually transmitted diseases. Free exams and pap smears were given to the local women as well as educational programs to inform these women and their partners about reproductive health. The first stage of this project was the renovating and general cleaning up of the two midwives' offices. The two midwives were given new gynecological beds and all the necessary equipment to run a women's clinic in addition to receiving comprehensive professional training. Between them, the two midwives are capable to testing 100 patients each month.

This project ran from 2004 to 2006.
