ALF IN BALI
Kembali Back-to-School Program

In 1999 the Indonesian government mandated that every child must go to school for nine years. Even so, many children still drop out of school before they reach junior high school, while some even quite in the primary grades. Since October 2002 Bali's economy has been devastated - and few families have escaped the negative affects of the bombings. The drop-out rate risks becoming worse.

Kembali means "return" in Indonesian - meaning that this project gives underprivileged Balinese children the opportunity to return to school by providing them with school uniforms, books, school supplies and snack money. The project is closely monitored by a group of field workers who ensure that the children receive the education they have been promised. The entire Kembali project now funds over 500 children. In 2009-2010, ALF is funding 277 children, including thirty students in their last year of Junior High School in Pemuteran, North Bali.

ALF also funded textbooks and writing books for 831 children in the five primary schools in Pemuteran for the 2005-2006 academic year as well as bookshelves, benches and chairs for the classrooms. A decision was made to assist all of the children with some of the expenses as opposed to funding a small percentage of the children with all their school expenses. Needless to say, the project has been well-received by local communities and a number of additional sponsors have signed up to their program thanks to lead funding provided by ALF and support from the Bali Hotels Association.Yayasan Anak Pemuteran, established by the management and staff of Puri Ganesha works with the children in after school programs as well as providing scholarship funds for local children and is carrying on the work begun with ALF.

As part of the Kembali program, ALF has also funded in-school libraries at four elementary schools:  SD 1 Abianbase, Kapal; SD 2 Abianbase, Kapal; SD 3 Abianbase, Kapal; and SD 12 Sanur.   Each library is housed in its own room which was renovated and painted and then furnished with tables, chairs and shelving and appropriate books for each grade level.   YKIP will be reviewing how well the library is used at the end of each semester.
